Words to Live by

Not Enough to Say It

To be a man like David and gain the title he had, you would need to see, “Well what did he talk about?” We learn from Proverbs 4:23 that out of the heart come “the issues of life.” What is in my heart will come out. What consumes my conversations is what I love. Do I primarily talk about work, my favorite hobbies, or my favorite sports team? The list could go on, but how do these things get into our hearts? It all starts with the mind.

Proverbs 23:7

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:…”

When we say that we love something, but never think about it which leads us to talk about it, one would have to question their actual love for this things. For example, I could say I love cars all day long. Just the phrase “I love cars.” But when someone who truly loves cars begins to ask me about the details of any vehicle, they would quickly realize that I am a faker. They would learn that by my lack of understanding or knowledge, I really did not love cars, but I loved the idea mentally about them. This is often how we treat God and his word. Just like tricking the car guru, we try to trick God, who is the word, constantly into thinking we love him. David many times in

Psalms not only says he loves the word of God but meditated on it.

Psalm 1119:97

O how I love thy lay? It is my meditation all the day.

He did not just think about it sometimes. He did not just look at it and admire it. He studied it and knew it. This led to him truly loving it. It was in his speech daily. It was what he delighted in each day. This is when David gained his title.

Psalm 119:80

Let my heart be sound in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.

Psalm 119:92

Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine

affliction.

Psalm 119:161

Princes have persecuted me without cause: by my heart standeth in

awe of thy word.

Psalm 119:101

I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

Psalm 119:160

Thy word is true from the beginning: and everyone of thy righteous

judgments endureth forever.

Psalm 119:89

For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

In these few verses, you can clearly see where the Word of God had reign in every aspect of his life. Listening to a message by Corey Gordon, associate pastor of Callie Harbin Baptist Church, he stated, “David did not fall into sin because he forgot what God said. He fell because it was not in its proper place. He had it in his head, but is was no longer getting into his heart.”

We as believers often think “Oh I am good! I know the Bible. I have read that before.” There is a long distance from our head to our heart. If the Word of God is not changing my heart to be more like Christ, I will look no different than a pharisee. The word of God was for me to know my Savior more intimately in order to love others as he does. If his word is my delight, my delights will become his delights. Through that, His words will flow out of my mouth and others will know the love I have for him. If His word is my delight, I will want to be like David and speak his truth to anyone. It will make me wiser as my decisions and thoughts will be filtered through what God’s word has to say about my reaction and sin.

“The issue with sin is that it is a disconnect of my heart to the word of God.” -Corey Gordon

When people use the term “drifting away from the Lord.” It comes down to my heart of his word hidden in it. It is one thing to memorize it, but it is another thing to let that change your life. Let the word pierce our hearts if we get it in our minds daily.

Hebrew 4:12

For the word of God is quick, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
